I know how you feel {my family session}

A few months ago my own family had our photos taken. I was so excited! It had been a little over a year and a half since our last family photos, I know...gasp, but my kids were just at ages where they wouldn't even look at the camera. Maybe cause they were sick of mine. ;)

So the planning began. Much talking, texting and messaging between me and my incredibly talented friend and fellow photographer Mandy Lowe. She lives in Texas and was going to be out for a visit so I begged her to fit us in...so glad she did. So location is set and photographer is set. Now to find outfits, well all my original thoughts went out the window and I was getting the final touches a day before the session. Yea, not what I planned on!

The day of our session my son hates his shirt because it's a button up and doesn't have a cartoon character on in. My daughter who NEVER gets sick is sick. As in...I don't want to get out of bed, move, get dressed, I'm not walking or brush anything sick. ;( Poor thing!!

We get ready and head out. All I need is just one family photo I tell Mandy and my grumpy kids. I thought we were doomed when Chloe wouldn't let daddy put her down, but that quickly changed. She began to perk up and my sweet girl shined through. She may not have worn her shoes, custom made hair band or accessories, but she was happy and herself. Can't ask for anymore than that.

So when I say that "I know how you feel"...believe me, I do!! And although it didn't go the way I planned in my head, it was beyond perfect. Our family was captured as we really are and those moments are captured forever to enjoy. I will forever have my kids frozen at this very special time in their lives.

I know what it feels like to anticipate my photo session, wait for the preview, anticipate the package in the mail and cry viewing the images with my family.

To Mandy I say "thank you!!" You have given me a priceless gift that I am forever grateful for and I love you.

To all of you who have let me do that for you...I am honored.

There is just something about a new year that gets me all tingly inside. Silly I know! I love looking back on the past year and examining it..for both it's good and it's bad. And I love learning from both and striving to do better. I am a firm believer that the more you know, the better you do. With anything. So you should never stop learning. And this year I learned a lot.

2011 has been an amazing year for me! Both in my work life and my personal life. I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love for a living and so grateful for all your support. Michelle Peterson Photography had an amazing past year and got the chance to meet and work with so many awesome people. Thank you, thank you for always supporting me, trusting me and cheering me on!!! I appreciate it more than I can express!

So although 2011 was great...like all good things it has to come to an end. Or does it?

To 2012 I say "bring it!!" So many great sessions are coming our way. Some new projects in the works. A little cosmetic work. And always lots of fun for sure!!

So I hope that you will join me welcome in 2012 and then join me for the ride!

We are about to say goodbye to another year. And as we do I am filled with so many emotions over 2011. There have been both ups and downs, tears and laughter and lots of hard work.

I have learned so much this year and am so very grateful for it. And I am so appreciative to all of you who support, mentor and cheer me on.

I love what I do!

As we leave 2011 I want to share just a few more of my favorites from this year.

It's finally arrived...me last session of the year!

It's bitter-sweet for me.

Some days it felt like the season was never going to end and others I never wanted it to.

I had so much fun this year, but am happy to enjoy a little down time the next few weeks as I take it easy and enjoy my little family.

Not to worry, there will be posts, just fewer for a few weeks. ;)

I couldn't have ended my year on a better note. A beautiful location with one of my favorite families!!

As with any job there are times that you start to feel a little burnt out.

You start to drag a little.

With my job that feeling comes at least once this time of year.

I have to admit that I was feeling it pretty hard when I had my session with this family. It had been lots of long days and late nights lately and lets face it...I was just plain tired!

This family had no idea, but they were just what I needed. They made me feel loved and special and their sweet smiling faces were just what I needed.

They were my comfort food!!

They filled me up as so many of my sessions have this year. I am truly blessed!

So to my new friends I say "thank you."

There, I said it!

And it's 100% true.

I have know Yvette for years now. We used to work together before the days of married life and babies. I don't get to see her often enough, but when I do it always feels like "home" to me. She is just good for your spirit. Not only is she beautiful on the outside, but inside as well. There is just something about her that draws you near and puts a smile on your face.

I had so much fun chatting with her and seeing her beautiful kiddos. It was sensory overload for sure with all this cuteness.

I can't tell you how happy it made me to shoot this session.

I'm not even going to tell you how long it has been since this family had a "family photo" taken of them.

I'm so glad that they trusted me to do this for them. I had so much fun with them..such a fun and sweet family.

I have a special love for mom as she now teaches my little man in school. And I must add that he loves her too.

Thanks for spending some time with me D family and for making me laugh a lot....it's always appreciated. ;)

We all know someone like them.

We may even secretly want to be like them.

They are the cool kids on the block! Or in this case the cool "family."

I have been waiting to get my lens on this family as a whole for a while now and when Denise booked a family session for this year I was a little too excited. And then when she picked her location I did go absolutely crazy. She didn't know it, but I love this spot and don't get to shoot there nearly enough.

I adore this cool crew and am so blessed to know them. I am especially grateful for a certain little man who is very special to my little man. ;)

He got her phone number and a few days later they had their first date.

For me my job isn't just about "making the buck."

Yes, for sure this is my job and yes,I can't do it for free, but it's also so much more for me. It's about the people I get to meet and the friendships I get to make.

I love being able to freeze time and capture memories for people And when I get to call those people "friends" it's even better! I really do have the best clients ever and am grateful for their trust in me.

I have had the pleasure of photographing this sweet family for a few years now. The fact that they keep coming back to me means more than I can put into words.

I was so excited when I got the email from my friend Tara asking me to take her family pictures this Holiday. This has been a long time coming and I couldn't have been more excited!!

There was a lot of planning and prepping on mom's part and it showed...everyone looked awesome.

As we got started I could see the stress in my dear friend's eyes "just breath, trust me" I told her.

You see the little ones (as most times) didn't care that I was there to capture them as an ENTIRE family. And you know what...it was perfect. This is "real" life and these to me are always my favorite images.

I adore so many images from this session just as I do this family.

They grow up too fast..I keep telling myself that about my own kids.

When my friend and previous manager contacted me to take her son's senior portraits I was both excited and sad. I was honored that she wanted me to do this, but at the same time could not believe that he was graduating from high school. There was no way that he was old enough for that!

I remember when him and his little sister ran around the work office while waiting for their mom to finish up. Drawing pictures at the desk and those little giggles.

I can't believe how fast time really goes! Michael you have turned out to be such a handsome young man and on top of that you have the personality to match.

Tis' the season {family}

Tis' the season...the Holiday photo season that is!!

Holiday sessions are in full swing and I couldn't be more happy. I love this time of year, like a lot of you do. I love the changes in weather and the cool crispness that creeps in (hopefully soon here in So Cal). I love the happy little ones as they get so excited for all the festivities. And I love all the smiling faces that I get to spend time with as we make memories.

I especially love when I sit down to start the editing of a session and I can't stop smiling. This was definitely one of THOSE times!!

I was so excited when Julie told me that we were going to get to spend some time with a set of twins. Oh how I loved watching these two little ones interact.

I rarely enter contests because I NEVER win. I just don't...it's that simple!

So when I saw the amazing contest that Julie Rollins was having I was torn. I know, silly of me, but remember I never win so I really didn't think much of it. I think I finally decided to enter on one of the last days. So imagine my surprise when I was checking who won and saw that it was ME. I didn't just win, I won the grand prize. I think I reread it about 4 times before it sank in. I was really going to get to spend the day with the "baby whisperer."

So last week I had the amazing opportunity to spend the entire day with Julie. I was over the top excited. You see she is just as nice and genuine as she is talented. We met last year at a photography workshop and have kept it touch ever since. Thank goodness for technology and the ability it has to keep us connected!! Seriously!!

Meet sweet little Annalisse Mae, just 8 days new. She was such a doll for us and I think she actually loved her time in the spotlight.

what do I wear?? {Inland Empire Photographer}

"What should we wear?"

That is a question that I get asked on a regular basis. And to be honest I love to suggest ideas. It's a usual conversation with my clients so I thought I would share some of my favorite tips.

These are not meant to be "a rule" by any means. Just tips and advice I have seen and picked up along the way. ;)

~ Keep it simple!~

Avoid too many logos or patterns. Keep the focus on the person, not the clothes.

~Keep your location in mind.~

If you are taking pictures in the snow you may not want to wear shorts and sandals. Or if you are having your session in an ally , you may not want to wear Hawaiian print.

~Mix it up!~

Long gone are the days of jeans and a white shirt (although that's fine also). Don't be afraid of color. Pick corresponding colors for the family and have fun with it. Don't be afraid to mix some patterns and colors.

~Reflect the real you~

I totally understand that we all want to look fabulous for our photos, but let's also be realistic. We want the images to reflect who "you" really are. So if you don't dress up like you are going to Prom everyday then maybe not every image should have those outfits in them. Bring changes of clothes if needed.

A perfect example of this is ME. I have my own family session coming up very soon and although I have these killer heels I want to rock, reality is I may just fall and break my neck since I don't wear heels on a regular basis. So the heels will make an appearance and then be gone. ;)

~Keep the end result in mind.~

This kind of goes along with reflecting the "real" you. Keep in mind what you want to use your images for. If they are going to be hung in your home then you may also want to consider that when picking your outfits. You might not want to wear lime green in all your pictures if your home is very neutral (I'm just sayin'). You want them to fit right in!

So I hope that these little tips (at least 1) helped if even a bit.

Don't fear the clothes...have fun with them!!!

In fact, this sweet young lady is celebrating her 16th birthday today!

So, lets meet Andrea. She had turned 15 and that was a big deal for her. That meant she was ready for her Quinceanera. I was honored to photograph such a sweet young lady on her special day.

It's that time of year again...the time to start thinking about the Holidays. I know this is hard to do when it's still like 139 degrees outside, but reality is that they will be here before you know it. They seem to come faster each year in my opinion. ;)

Oh happy day: Brett + Whitney {Redlands Wedding Photographer}

When I read the news that Whitney was getting married (thank you facebook) I gasped. I just couldn't believe it! And when I got the call asking if I would photograph her special day I gasped again, composed myself long enough to finish the phone call and then hung up the phone and sat there for a moment.

You see Whitney just couldn't be getting married. Her and her family are very spcial to me and in my mind she was still the young girl I used to teach at Church. She just wasn't allowed to grow up and get married. And who was this boy that was to be her Eternal companion?

I had so many questions to ask her, but when I saw her face I had none. She was happy! And in turn, so was I! And I was even more happy that I got to be the one to capture this happy day!!

I was a spotlighted {Inland Empire Photographer}

While I was out of town with my family over 4th of July I got a text from a good friend congratulating me on my feature. Yea, I had NO idea what she was talking about!! I quickly called for my hubby so we could use his spiffy phone to pull up the article.

You see, I had done the interview for this feature a while back and didn't even know if it would ever be used. Thank goodness one friend saw it and spread the word to my informative friend.

The article was used on our Church site and is a fun and easy little read. You may even see some familiar photos.

How long have you been a photographer?

I am just starting into my third year.

What got you interested in photography?

Well, I started just wanting to get good pictures of my own children, and it just grew from there.

What is your photography specialty?

Children and families—it just kind of happened that way.

How did you get interested in submitting your photos to the Church?

My mother and sister-in-law found an article in a Church publication and told me to go for it.

How do you feel you can use photography to build up the kingdom or share the gospel?

In my profession I get to shoot photos of a lot of people who aren't members of the Church, and I try to be an example for them.

What about photography inspires you?

I love seeing families and children interacting. I love when a photographer captures a smile or a moment that can later bring tears to your eyes and make the moment last forever.

What part of photography is the most rewarding?

Seeing people's reactions when they view their galleries or when I deliver their photos.

How has photography influenced your spiritual understanding?

Years ago, I had the opportunity to have dinner with a freelance photographer for National Geographic. One tip he shared was perspective, and to look to the light. Looking for the light has been my inspiration. The way light rests upon any subject can turn an average photo into a masterpiece. Without light, there would be nothing to photograph. As light rests upon the subject, the subject radiates to its full potential. We also radiate as individuals when we allow the giver of all light, our Savior, to rest upon us. We then rise to our full potential and become a masterpiece in His hands.

If you could take photos of anything, what would it be?

My family and loved ones. I want to document life's moments for those I love the most in this world.

Where is your “dream location” to shoot?

Paris, France. I love the character and the charm of the “city of lights.” And my hubby served his mission in France, so that helps too.

Where is your favorite location to shoot?

Outdoors with that yummy natural lighting.

How would you describe your photography?

Fun, colorful, candid, and natural.

What tip or trick have you learned along the way that made the biggest difference in the quality of your photos?

Don't push for a perfect shot. Capture life as it is. Just let your clients be themselves, and the moments will happen.

What advice would you give to new photographers?

Take the time to really learn “your” style, and don't be afraid to just be yourself. You will always have critics, but just block out all the negativity. If you like your photos and your clients like them, then that is all that matters.

How much do you edit your photos?

As little as possible. Every picture is different, but you don't want to lose the realness of the image.

I have to admit that lately I have had a bit of the "baby bug." Not like the I'm really gonna have a baby kind, but more like the missing of my own being so little kind of bug.

I blame this on my little man starting 1st grade last week and a 3 yr old little princess who wants to do everything herself.

Oh, and all the cute little ones I get to spend time with on Sundays and at work. :)

Take this little doll for example. I have had the privilege of photographing her a few times now as you can see here and here. I feel so much a part of her (and her families) life because of it. I get to watch her grow and document it forever. What a joy!!!

These are the moments for sure that make me LOVE my job!!!

Miss Samantha thanks for spending some time with me and for such fun. You are growing too fast, but how fun it is to watch you!!

Why are Professional Photographers so Expensive??

This is a question that I know a lot of you think about and honestly it's one that I do too, but probably for different reasons.

This is a subject that I addressed a while ago and have been wanting to revisit for a while. And now is as great a time as any as we head into the Holiday season when everyone is thinking about their Christmas photos. ;)

I often get asked this question and think to myself "really, it's not that expensive." Sure the initial cost may look like a shock to some, but do you really get out of the chain stores paying the low price that they got you in the door with in the first place? NO! Most of the time you don't and you end up buying lots of the same posed image that you always have left overs of. Don't get me wrong, these studios have their place, but these days there are so many other options available. Explore them!!!

Over the next few weeks I hope to put a little more info out there to educate you on the world of Custom Photography and give you a small glimpse into my world.

I hope that you stick with this article and read all the way through...it's a great one!

"In this digital age where everyone has cameras, scanners, and home "photo printers," we hear this all the time: How do professional (or personal) photographers charge $X for an 8x10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drugstore? Simply put, the customer is not just paying for the actual photograph; they're paying for time and expertise.

The average one-hour portrait session

First, let's look at the actual work involved:

Travel to the session
Setup, preparation, talking to the client, etc.
Shoot the photos
Travel from the session
Load images onto a computer
Back up the files on an external drive
2 - 4 hours of Adobe® Photoshop® time, including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, and backing up edited photographs. Proof photos are also ordered.
2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment, and ship.
Possibly meet clients at the studio to review photos and place order. Meeting and travel time average 2 hours.

You can see how a one-hour session easily turns into an eight-hour day or more from start to finish. So when you see a personal photographer charging a $200 session fee for a one-hour photo shoot, the client is NOT paying them $200 per hour.

The eight-hour wedding

A wedding photographer typically meets with the bride and groom several times before and after the wedding. And it’s not uncommon to end up with 1,000 - 2,000 photos, much more than a portrait session. Many photographers spend 40-60 hours working on one eight-hour wedding if you look at the time that is truly involved. Again, when a wedding photographer charges $4,000 for eight hours of coverage, clients are NOT paying them $500 an hour!
(Don’t forget that the photographer runs the wedding day to some extent. A comfortable, confident wedding photographer can make a wedding day go more smoothly.)

The expertise and cost of doing business

Shooting professional photography is a skill acquired through years of experience. Even though a DSLR now costs under $1,000, taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.
Most personal photographers take years to go from buying their first camera to making money with photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera, there is a mountain of other equipment and software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website, etc. And don’t forget backdrops, props, rent, utilities, insurance, etc!
In addition to the financial investment, photographers actually have to have people skills to make subjects comfortable in front of the camera. Posing people to look their best is a skill by itself. You could argue that posing is a more important skill than actually knowing how to use the camera. A poorly exposed photo can be saved, but a badly posed photo cannot.

The chain store photo studio

Chain stores do have their place. For a very cheap price you can run in, shoot some quick photos, and be done with it. But you get what you pay for.
Consider the time and effort that a personal photographer puts into photographs, compared to a chain store. Store sessions last just a few minutes, while a personal photographer takes the time to get to know the people, makes them comfortable, makes them laugh. If a baby is crying at a chain store, they often don’t have the time (or the patience) to wait because everyone is in a hurry.
The truth is that many chain store studios lose money. In fact, Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios in 2007 because of the financial drain. What the chain stores bank on is a client coming in for quick, cheap photos…and while there, spending $200 on other items. They are there to get you in the door.

The real deal

Professional, personal photographers are just that—professionals. No different than a mechanic, dentist, doctor, or electrician. But a personal photographer often becomes a friend, someone who documents a family for generations with professional, personal photographs of cherished memories.
Maybe we need to help clients look at it this way: A pair of scissors costs $1.50 at the drugstore. Still, most people will gladly pay a lot more to hire a professional hair dresser to cut their hair.

The added attention and quality that a personal photographer gives is worth every penny."

Today was the day...back to school day to be exact.

My little man started 1st grade today.

I was a bit nervous after the drama that came with the start of kindergarten, but happy to report that not a tear was shed by him or I (so far).

I'm so excited for all that this year has to offer my guy.

He was here visiting from Hawaii for a few weeks and mom asked if I could get a picture of him since he just turned one. So we had a quick photo shoot, I'm talking like 10 minutes max.

tea for two {Redlands Children Photographer}

Like most parents I am in love with my kids and think that everything they do is just so cute, well most of the time.

This is especially true for me and my little girl right now. I am so in love with this age and this stage of life she in is. I can't get enough, really!

She lives in the days of tea parties, being a princess, dancing ALL the time and not caring who's watching.

She lives by the motto of "the more fluffy, frilly and sparkly the better."

She even has the little princess voice to match.

This was a shoot I had really been wanting to do, while keeping it simple. I wanted to capture "her" as she really is right now...my fun-loving dancing princess.

We had family visiting from Hawaii at the time so cousin Savvy came along for some fun, so glad she did. Worked out perfect since they love so many of the same things.

Girls, I hope you always dance like no one is watching!!

Oh summer is here in the hottest way. If you know me at all then you know I am NOT a fan of it and it's long hot days. Don't get me wrong there are things I enjoy about it. Who can hate summer vacations, beach trips, camping, bbq's, fresh squeezed lemonade and ice cream...lots and lots of ice cream? Not me...I do love those things!

Summer has it's moments and here have been a few of my recent favorites.

The kids think I'm the greatest for getting them this fancy pool for the backyard. Shh, don't tell them any differently. ;)

This family is no stranger to my blog. They make an appearance at least once a year. Every time is an adventure and a fun one at that.

I love this family, like really love them! You see, I don't let too many people into my close inner circle so when I do you better know I love you! ;) They just moved and we miss them already. Although they are not a great distance away it's still not the same. With busy schedules at both ends I know we won't get to see our friends as much as I would like. Don't get me wrong, we are super happy for them, just sad for us. ;)

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing the 3rd annual Strike A Pose event at Cabazon Outlets. This is my second year doing it and I just love it! So much fun to see the contestants strut their stuff down the catwalk. And the look on the winners faces is priceless.

It was a beautiful day in Southern California, but I have to admit that I was very grateful for the breeze. It got a little toasty at times if you know what I mean. ;)

the sweetest little package

Meet Eli...the newest member of the Peterson family and my newest nephew.

He decided to join us a little earlier than expected so that meant I had to wait patiently (or try to) for some bonding time...aka, his first photo shoot.

It was well worth the wait and I must say I think he enjoyed it!!

I had the pleasure of getting to spend some time with this little cutie-pie this weekend.

Meet Danica, just 6 days old and as sweet as can be. Really she was!!

I had been looking forward to her arrival for a while now. Mom was very excited and that always gets me fired up. As a bonus I got to chat with her mom and Grandma a bit...such sweet ladies in this family.

I cringe when I hear people say they would love to relive their high school days. Sure, it had it's moments, and great friendships were made there, but for the most part I could do without.

My 20's were pretty great I have to admit.

But there is just something about this time I am in right now that is the best by far. I have to admit that I do have a problem with the thought of getting old right now, but I think that is just the mom in me and wanting to be with my kiddos forever. I feel that at this time I have really gotten a feel for who I am as a person and have come into my style.

So I have been slowly changing up my home to make it more "me" and not what I think the norm should be. ;) And same with my photography. So, I had some ideas that I wanted to play with and all I needed was a willing model (or two).

I had so much fun with this session that I decided to break it into two posts because I just had too many favorites to fit into one.

Yesterday I had some errands that I needed to get done around town and as usual my little sidekick was right beside me. She is always up for whatever the day has to offer her and does it with a smile (most all the time). She really is the sweetest little gal and funny as can be also. Yesterday it dawned on me again just how funny my little princess is.

I remembered that I had some images that I snapped of her a little while back that I never posted and capture her personality so well.

I am lucky enough to have photographed his brothers as newbies and it's always a pleasure with these little guys. I love this family...they have hearts of gold and I'm so happy that they continue to trust me with their precious memories.

I love my sessions that I get to enjoy with friends that I maybe don't get to see as often as I would like. Most times it seems like not much time has passed at all as conversations seem to pick up where they left off when we last saw each other and flows as natural as ever.

The one factor that always brings me back to reality though is the kids...they have sure changed. They grow way too fast! Even though we meet up at least once a year to snap some cherished images of the family, I am always amazed at how fast time really does go. And how important it really is to freeze time a bit with these lasting memories!

I'm in love with this post for so many reasons.

The location...my new fav and possibly of all time.

The lighting...so yummy and perfect.

The subject...perfectly lovable, hugable and squishable. Perfectly perfect in every way!

If you follow me on facebook, first thank you, and second you probably hear me talk about getting my baby fix on my sessions a lot. I love babies! Their smell, their laughs, even their little cries. But I also love to give them back to mom at the end of the day! ;)

This brings us to one of my favorite little fixes on Sundays. Meet Miss Eva. Her parents are nice enough to let me borrow her at church and get my baby fill...she certainly does the trick. And yes, she really is this happy and smiley all the time.

slow down...there is never a perfect time

Is there a perfect time? For anything? No, at least I don't think so.

We wait for the perfect time to do so many things. That "perfect time" doesn't come and then those opportunities are lost forever.

I think that the perfect time is what YOU make of it.

I talk to people all the time that have not updated their family photos for quite a while. And I mean quite a while. This makes me sad. Why? The number one reason I hear is that " I am waiting to lose weight." Yes, we all know that excuse, but really who cares about that.

Not your hubby, he loves you no matter your size... just as your kiddos do. No one is going to be looking at the size of the person in the picture, just the emotion that was felt in it. And all your family will see is the amazing wife and mother that they know and love. You will never be sorry that you took those pictures, but you would be if you didn't.

It's easy to say...

I'm too busy.

I need to lose a little weight first.

Maybe next year.

When I have a little more money.

When work slows down.

Well it's time to slow down and put you and your family first. Truth is we can use some or all of those excuses most all the time. There is never a perfect time!

I know first hand that there is never a perfect time. I know that time slips away too fast and you are left with wishing you had taken the opportunity when you had it. People get sick and accidents happen..they just do. I wish that I had taken more pictures of my own mom before she left this world. I was young and didn't know the value in that. Now I do!! And now I take for my own pictures for future memories...lots of pictures.

I hope that this may inspire someone, who has been waiting for the perfect time, to book a photographer today! Don't let the time slip away because you never know what tomorrow might bring.
